Ai Therapy Purpose Statement
I’ve been interested in the interface between artificial intelligence (AI) and mental health since the release of Woebot in 2017. I’ve personally experimented with and tested most of the major apps and mental health AI products currently available, nearly all of which have been disappointing and have clear limitations when looked at as a provider. Yet, future iterations are compelling and promising.
Ultimately I decided to make this page because I had seen so many people experimenting with AI for their mental health, mostly ignoring or being unaware of the recommendations from professional associations. It is also continuously being referred to as “therapy” (rather than ‘personalized self-help’ or ‘personal support’), which is misleading and troubling. I realized that basic information and guidelines were not accessible to a wide range of people, and this page is my attempt to help with this and offer caution, as well as tips for making experimental AI use safe and effective.
